YOWPSUD recently took part in the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) Regional Communication Strategic Workshop on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE), a three–day forum that brought together media practitioners, journalists, civil society organizations, and representatives from county and national government. The forum focused on strengthening the role of communication and technology in the implementation of the National Strategy to Prevent and Counter Violent Extremism.

Representing YOWPSUD was Taylor Torch, Portfolio Lead for Peace & Security, Climate & Food Security, and Head of Communications. His participation underscored YOWPSUD’s commitment to advancing responsible media engagement and community–centered approaches in addressing violent extremism. Taylor also represented the CEF Working Group on Training and Capacity Building, a role that directly supports the operationalization of the NSPCVE at county level.
Strengthening Media for Peaceful Elections
Discussions during the workshop emphasized the critical influence of media in shaping public perceptions, particularly as Kenya moves toward the 2027 election period. Participants collaboratively developed practical interventions to be implemented before, during, and after elections by media practitioners and journalists. These included promoting ethical reporting, developing counter–narratives to hate speech, establishing unified information management systems, and enhancing coordination between media, CSOs, and government institutions.

While presenting on behalf of his group as a media practitioner and journalist, Taylor highlighted the need for proactive journalism that prioritizes peace, accuracy, and accountability. The proposals aligned closely with the NSPCVE Communication & Technology pillar and are expected to inform County Action Plans across several regions.
Building Collaborative Networks
The forum provided an important platform for networking and learning, bringing together national and vernacular radio, television reporters, digital content creators, and security sector communicators. Participants explored emerging challenges such as AI–driven misinformation, online radicalization, and the growing reality that “everyone is media.” Strategies were identified to equip communicators with tools to verify information, engage audiences responsibly, and amplify credible local voices.
YOWPSUD reaffirmed its dedication to working alongside partners to translate policy into community impact. The organization continues to advocate for youth inclusion, climate and food security considerations, and peacebuilding as interconnected elements of resilience against extremism.
Appreciation
YOWPSUD extends sincere appreciation to NCTC for convening this timely and impactful training. The knowledge and partnerships built will play a significant role in advancing peaceful, informed, and cohesive communities in line with the NSPCVE.
Together, through responsible communication, we can safeguard lives, protect democratic processes, and promote a culture of peace.
