IYD 2021: Creatives Interview (Paula S BlackSista)

Transforming food systems; Youth innovation for human and planetary health

Stage Live Performance by Paula S Blacksista

With the world’s population expected to increase by 2 billion people in the next 30 years, it has become recognized by numerous stakeholders that simply producing a larger volume of healthier food more sustainably will not ensure human and planetary wellbeing. Other crucial challenges must also be addressed, such as the interlinkages embodied by the 2030 Agenda including poverty reduction; social inclusion; health care; biodiversity conservation; and climate change mitigation. It has been acknowledged that there is a need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life, while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.

The theme of International Youth Day 2021, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, highlights the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

In commemoration of the #IYD2021, YOWPSUD is aiming at empowering the youth with a platform to embrace and expose their art and also building their contextual capacity by sensitizing the artists on the importance of aligning their content with SDGs.

During an interview with an artist, a fitness instructor with a passion and potential for music, here is what she had to say about the #IYD2021.

Name: Paulina Sandra Strozewska

Artistic name: Paula S BlackSista

Country: Poland and Spain

1. What inspires you to do music?

I'm inspired to create music by my love for it! A love for various sounds as well and for dancing. I have been a dancer since I was a child and I know that I would not be able to express myself in dance as much as I can when I hear music and I think that I am not the only one who thinks that way. I am also inspired to create music by the creativity and ideas that are inside me. I always thought that I would like to convey something to people, give them something more, motivate them with my music and personality. And of course apart of that, I also have to add that my greatest inspiration and motivation for creating my own projects and music and songs is my idol and I think for many of you as well, the wonderful and extremely talented Beyoncé Knowles.

2. What is special about International Youth Day?

On international youth days, the important above all is that we show young people, a new generations, how important they are to the world. I think that every young person is motivated if they know how much the world needs them. A young person means new ideas, new experiences, a new view of the world and this is what the world needs and we people living on the earth, even the elderly, also need a new generation to survive.

3. What role can artists play in transforming food systems?

Hmmm, this is actually really interesting and good question. First of all, the artist tries to be an icon or an idol to follow. That is why we, the artists, should take care of our image, and even more so of our health - after all "you are what you eat". We also need to teach ourselves and others to respect food, because unfortunately there is a shortage of food in many parts of the world, which is very sad. By the way, I must to say that in addition to music, my other passion is fitness and a healthy lifestyle with balanced diet. That's why I personally recommend to everyone to exercise, eat healthy, but do not overeat and, of course, share food with others in more need. I think we people should look at food as something holy, we should be grateful that there is so much to choose from and it is thanks to food that we are able to survive, because without food and water, human would not survive.

4. What message do you have for the youth?

My message to young people is that they should always believe in themselves regardless of adversities and never give up on anything. I believe that if you really want something "you can do it" ! And everything is possible if we set a goal to achieve. And this is what the young generation should never forget!
